The Engine Room
The Engine Room mixes elements of soul, jazz, indie, instrumental music, pop, and straight-ahead rock n roll in a bracingly original combination. Tara Davis is as energetic a frontperson as any band could ever hope to have. Miles handles both rhythm and lead guitar duties with soul and aplomb, and Dave and Jay make a frighteningly dynamic rhythm section indeed, it was their prowess that inspired the bands name.
Band/artist history
The seeds of what would become The Engine Room were sown in The Field School Jazz Ensemble. Following the disintegration of their hard rock band Guilty Civilians in fall 2004, bassist Dave Gassmann and drummer Jay Nemeyer turned to a fellow jazz band member, Miles Eichner, a hotshot guitarist and veteran of local jam band Joppa. Having played in the same jazz band for three years led to an almost telepathic musical rapport between the three instrumentalists, and they began composing original material almost immediately.
Finding a sympathetic singer was not as simple, but by spring 2005 they had turned their sights on Tara Davis, a new jazz band member who was as enthusiastic as she was talented. Her lyrics and melodies fit the music the others were writing perfectly, and the new four-piece made its live debut early that summer to a packed house. The audience, curious to see what these four very different musical personalities would produce, was not disappointed; The Engine Room mixes elements of soul, jazz, indie, instrumental music, pop, and straight-ahead rock n roll in a bracingly original combination.
