The Dying Effect

We are The Dying Effect. Formally First Issue. we play the music we love, metal/screamo style.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
The story of The Dying Effect started a little bit like this. From the small town of sylvan lake in 2001 three kids in grade 9 that really didn't fit in to the normal stereotypical high school kid, wanted to start a punk band. They didn't drink, smoke or do drugs, which was very uncommon in this town and were considered the losers among most people. These three kids were Tyrell, Bryce, and Daryl. Unfortunately none of these kids had much experience with any instruments. Daryl could play a beat here and there and Bryce could strum a few awful sounding chords and Tyrell barely new what a bass was and started playing bass just to be in the band. Aside from the instruments was their singing. The only one with a bit of sense in their singing was Daryl; he had been in choir a few times. As far as Tyrell and Bryce well they could sing, but threes a difference between singing and good singing. Together they formed the band Gonch. To be honest Gonch wasn't much of band. They had no experience in music or song writing and pretty much sucked. But some of the local kids enjoyed what they were doing. You have to realize that sylvan has an incredibly crappy scene and happens to be a hockey/ party town. So Gonch at the time was pretty much the only punk band out there. Gonch had their first show at the sylvan alliance church. A few kids came but they had a blast. To think about They really didn't play to well at all but they had so much fun. Gonch realized they wanted to progress in their music and become known more. They made new songs, practiced more, and played more shows whenever they could get them. Gonch wanted to record some of their stuff, but had absolutely no money to pay for it. So they went to the church and popped a tape in the recorder and played away. It sounded awful but was good enough for the boys. They sold a few like one or 2. Then in the winter of 2002 tension stared growing between members. There was lot of arguing and disagreement with each other, and the music. Tyrell was fed up and left the band. That was the end of what was Gonch. Then later on Tyrell started playing some music with his friend Billy that played guitar. Billy had actually wanted to join Gonch earlier, but never worked out. Him and Tyrell made up a song. The song was way better musically than what Gonch had been playing and they decided to start a band. Buts what's a band without a drummer? The only good drummer in sylvan was Daryl. So Tyrell and Billy called him up and they had a band. After a practice or two they realized the sound was too hollow and not full enough. The only other cool and half decent guitar player out there was Bryce. So now pretty much it was all the members from Gonch plus Billy. The boys loved the new style and they became a more solid band as they practiced. Then they realized they needed a name. How they came up with the name is kind of weird. Tyrell while in the bathroom one day was reading a magazine. While reading the magazine, one the annoying adds for subscriptions and renewals fell out. He picked it up and looked at the fine print for some reason and it read" first issue will take up to 6-8 weeks for delivery" and so he thought first issue was kind of a cool name. He brought it to the other guys and they thought it was a pretty cool name too. The name had really no significance, meaning or symbolism and to this day still doesn't. So that day they became what is now called First Issue. Weeee! First issues first happen to be at the same place and same event as the first Gonch show, seemed almost like a reunion or anniversary of some sort. The show was great and they boys really thought that they might have something going for them. After many shows and playing hard a problem arose. Daryl seemed to be slipping away from the band. He didn't want to practice, and would often leave in the middle of a practice for some reason. The other guys were starting to get angry with Daryl and later on Daryl decided to leave the band for undisclosed reasons. Tyrell and Bryce Billy found themselves in a major pickle. They needed Daryl and there were no other drummers that could stand up to Daryl's reputable playing. All out of options and with battle of the bands for the school coming up they decided to bring their friend Kirk in, not for permanent, but just long enough that first issue could find a new drummer who was at their level. First issue practice lots with him and he playing in the battle of bands and did a good job. After, the search for a permanent drummer continued. They put out posters at music stores and anywhere else they could be a potential drummer. But in the end they had no luck. So first issue still had no drummer. During this time the boys took time to improve on vocals and instruments. They were tired of not having a drummer and decided to try to get Daryl to come back. After lots of debating, compromising and a heck of a lot of begging, he finally decided to come back. They rest if the guys were so happy. First Issue played for a while but decided to change their name and style away from the Punk scene to more of a metal scene. and are now called the Dying Effect
