Girls with guitars, a viola, flute, cello and drums. Daddy's little angels? Almost. They are The Catholic School Girls: the tempting angels mothers warn about. Where did these girls come from? A Catholic college in St. Joseph, MN, of course.
Janel Goenner (guitar and vocals) traded her French horn in for a guitar in January of 2001 and wrote her first song in November of the same year. When the choir tour rolled around in March of 2002, Janel and Mary Beth Gleason (guitar and vocals), friends and roommates for the tour, wrote a song together in the basement at their home-stay in Winona, MN. They soon realized how well their voices meshed. Soon after, Mary Beth began to write songs and strum on any guitar she could find until she bought her first in March of 2003. Their Catholic School vocals and lilting harmonies are swingin’. Elizabeth Becker (viola and flute) began playing flute in 6th grade, violin in 8th grade and viola in 9th grade. She played with the SDSU orchestra until she graduated high school, and then played in the band Strung her freshman year of college. She beautifies and enhances songs with her Catholic School viola and flute solos. Maryne Mossey (cello) picked up her instrument of choice when she was young and continues to play in the college orchestra. She brings classically trained, yet modern Catholic School bass clef notes to root and vamp the band’s sound. Kari Ness (drums) learned to play percussion in the sixth grade and always thought it’d be cool to be in an all-female band. She also plays in the Wind Ensemble. Her pulse flows freely and accurately, creating a Catholic School energy and drive.
We have only played in Minnesota. The more venues we get to play-the more pumped we are about being who we are.
It has always been hard to define how we sound. We area an alternative-chick-rock band that is still developing its own sound.
2 Acoustic Guitars, Viola (flute or pennywhistle), drums, cello
