Drew was a senior at Edison High School. It was early spring, 2001. At the time he was enrolled in EHS's choir class. Because it was his last year, he was invited to perform a solo at the senior awards banquet that was to be held in a couple weeks. While considering he heard a song ("When I" by Devotion) which reminded him of the voices of Will and Nelson. He ran it by his choir director (Dr. King) and asked if he could perform in an acapella group as opposed to solo. It was okayed and Drew approached Will with the idea.
Will at the same time was a part of a dance group known as Innocence. They had tried to sing but some of the members were not interested in that area of performing. When Drew invited him to this banquet to sing he asked three of the Innoncence members to join the group (Nelson, Mike, and Choua). This put them at five members.
When listening to the song, it was realized that either Mike or Drew would be required to do bass. If you know the two of them, you'd realize that that would probably not be the greatest idea. Mike has no rhythm and Drew just can't sing all that low. So Drew asked Thou, a friend from his French class, if he was interested. Obviously he was (or else there wouldn't be Purl, right) and the show got on the road with its sixth member. On the first of April, Purl had its first practice. Weeks later they performed at the banquet and following that, they were invited to sing the alma mater at Drew's graduation. During our first year we also performed at other school social events, parties, concerts, another graduation and live radio. Practicing requried lots of hours sittin in the cafeteria after school, getting permission for Choua to practice), and having way too much fast food after practice. In the end, Choua was forced to withdraw from the group as of July 2004. And although Drew and William are off in UC Irvine and UC Davis respectively, the group maintains its work ethic and continues to perform while they are away. Every member of the group is responsible for the performances that are brought in. That's the story as of today. If you would like for us to perform, go ahead and email, phone, or write us as stated in the contact info. Thanx for your support, much love and respect to all of you out there...
