The Anglers
We play roots music -- honest, acoustic tunes ranging from reggae to oldtime country to acoustic hip-hop. We have been playing all over Taiwan for about two years now & have plans for world domination. We love to make people dance.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
The Anglers started out back in Edmonton, jamming on Ty's light blue front porch, but it really only found its feet in Taiwan. Ty & I both took jobs teaching kindergarten over here & soon got involved in music. There have been various configurations behind us but at present we are a 5-piece; three Canadians & two South Africans. We toured Alberta & BC in July of 2003 & plan to do it again in 2004. Christmastime 2004 should find us in South Africa, touring there.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Yes, we play out alot, in bars or pubs, at festivals, & wherever else we can. Some memorable shows include a party on Dashi beach, eastern Taiwan, a party at "the farmhouse" on Yang Ming Mountain (Tomstock), Spring Scream (Taiwan's biggest rock festival) in sunny Kenting, the past two years, The Edge of the World Festival on Haida Gwaii, BC, South Country Fair in Ft. McLeod, AB, & the Sasquatch Festival (Smoky Lake, AB) two years in a row now. The feeling of playing for a room full of sweaty, grooving, beautiful people is reason enough to keep on...
Your musical influences
Too many to list... We listen to everything, but have been compared to Bob Dylan, the Wailers, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson & Tom Waits. I personally think we're doing something similar to what G Love & the Special Sauce are doing... & as far as songwriting goes I owe a huge debt to Bob Dylan, Greg Brown, Bob Marley & Burning Spear.
