Judging from the looks of him, no one would expect Stephen "That Kid" Barbour to be a hip hop artist. He doesn't fit the mold, one might say. However, beginning when he was still just a simple boy, he's been shaped and molded to exemplify all that hip hop stands for. Growing up in Northern California, Ohio, and Southern California, he's seen his fair share of challenging experiences. Whether it was seeing over 70 foster kids pass through his biological parents home in about 5 yrs, watching his father's alcoholism, drug abuse and infidelity tear apart his family, or helping his mother as she struggled and then accomplished putting herself through school, That Kid has never expected anything less than success for himself. In '04 and '05 That Kid had an 8 month opportunity to truly see what was important in his life, and with the help of Looney Tunez, an experienced artist from LA, he began to put pen to pad about all the things he had experienced in order to establish himself as a qualified artist. Now three years and a lot of maturing later, he finds himself in the perfect market for his type of artist. Passionate, realistic, and always true to himself, That Kid is anything but 'just another rapper'. Working with new and upcoming producers like Jay Nari and S. Baker, he's not looking for his 'one lucky break', nor is he looking for hand outs. Determined to work, not 'hustle' to get what he wants, he knows the world owes him nothing, and has no problems putting in his time to show that he is exactly what a great artist should be: Deserving. He loves hip hop. And hip hop loves him right back.
Band/artist history
The history is simple. I've loved Hip Hop since I heard it for the first time when I was under 6 yrs old. Now, I'm just tryin' to give back to what I've loved for so long.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Not yet, I want to have more complete material to show off.
Your musical influences
For Hip Hop, it starts with Sir Mix-A-Lot, Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, 2Pac, and on and on! But seriously, my over all influences include Metallica, Garth Brooks, Bush and odd shit like that!
What equipment do you use?
I use Adobe Audition recording software, with an M-Audio Solo interface connected to an MXL mic.
