Story behind the song
This song is a true story about a Vietnam Vet that I met at the Denver VA Medical Center.
Lyrics
Last weekend I took a day and went up to the city Spent most of the day at the mall, just cruising around When I was walking out of a store And I saw a man in a wheelchair He was in an army uniform, but both his legs were gone He was holding a sign that read “Vietnam Vet-No home or food” But everyone just kept passing him by So I walked up and started talkin to him We talked about his life, before and after the war He grew up in a small town in Wisconsin While in Nam he lost his folks He had no home to go to anymore And a landmine took his legs, and sight in one eye And all I could think was, what a sad sad life Right then he asked a man for some change The man said “Things are tough all over”, and walked away So I said hold on just one second sir, cant you see You’re in a 3 piece suit, a Rolex watch, and Italian leather shoes And I bet you have a house, and a couple cars too This man has no clean clothes, no legs, nor a home to go to But I bet if not for Vietnam in 65 He might have had just as good of a life as you and I Now I’ve got $20 on me, and I’m willing to bet you could spare one too I just think that it’s the least that we can do Right then I saw his eyes turn sad, as he handed me a $20 bill So I handed the $40 to the Vet, I couldn’t help but notice tears in his eyes He said I don’t know how to ever thank you All this time I thought we’d lost mankind That’s when he reached in his coat pocket, and revealed what he had inside He said I received this, after the war A United States Medal Of Honor I saw a sniper hiding in the trees, I shoved the Colonel down And let the bullet hit me, I just did what a soldier is trained to do That’s why I now give this medal to you You’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty To help your fellow man, and that proves what I have often pondered You don’t have to be a soldier, to be a Man Of Honor No you don’t have to be a soldier, to be a Man Of Honor
