Story behind the song
1979, I was working at Somerset Apartments as a maintenance man. It was afternoon break and I went to get cigarettes. It took too long to cross the field so I decided to drive my 1968 El Camino. As I pulled away from the office, the steering wheel didnt correct like normal and when I gave it some gas, we went into a car port hitting one of the posts and cracking it. It also destroyed the front end of my car. My dream car. The dream was over. I was in tears as I explained what happened to the apartment manager. Helen told me that it was okay, not to worry, everything would work out. I finished the day, arranged for the car to be towed and went home. When I got to work the next day, Jack O'Conner asked for my key ring. I figured I was going to get some more keys, I was up for a promotion. He handed me my pay envelope. Inside was an 'official' note. It said, 'Because of yesterday's incident, your services will no longer be required; your paycheck is being held in lieu of payment for the damage done by your car.' It was signed by Helen Oliver and she had left that morning for a conference in Kansas City.
Lyrics
I had a dream just the other day
I had a dream I died
And I almost cut my hair,
I sat right down and I cried.
Dreamin for another day
Dreamin for the sunshine
Dreamin for another day
When you will still be mine
Now yesterday was going so great
Then I wrecked my car
It seemed in such a short time
My happiness had gone so far
But Im still
Dreamin for another day
Dreamin for the sunshine
Dreamin for another day
When you will still be mine.
Today was such a shitty day
I got fired from my job
I walked home and tried to open the door
And off, fell the knob, I said
Give me a break, give me a break oh give me a break
Its time for the shit to end
The walls are tumbling, the walls are tumbling,
the walls are tumbling down!
