Story behind the song
Hochin is from the native American language of the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest (pre-USA) meaning "watcher." From a book of modern Pueblo stories by noted Native scholar Paula Gunn Allen, it is about a young girl's induction into the tradition as war captain or "watcher." The Pueblo were a non-violent culture so the term actually refers to other connotations such as "calendar keeper." During a paranormal experience she sees the deceased hochin and senses the post is now passed to her. The solos here mirror this passing on through the generations as each instrument "passes" it's part of the solo from one to the next, giving the sense that all three players are each a part of a single unified solo with changing colors.
