A couple of years ago I had a series of encounters that lead to the writing of this song. This happened over a period of a few months. I could only think that something is "broken"...this is not how our Country is supposed to be.

My name is "Papa Carl"...and by the name you may be able to tell I'm not a kid. I've been around a bit. I'm fortunate to be able to work with some great musicians who support me in my endeavors. I don't have one band as such but do collaborate with a very special group of people on my music. I'm focusing on music with some kind of message. I really respect the power some singer songwriter people had during the 30's through the 60's. Music can bring about change but maybe more importantly document a time, an era. I think about things in my life, things I see and write about them. Occasionally I'll stray from that pattern and write something about an emotion or a feeling that really got to me. I'm living and loving life right now. So...I write about what I see and feel.

Story behind the song
The people I met or read about are really what created this story. I felt deeply for what had happened to them. In some way, I was connected to all of them. I used to work in a hospital crisis center and would encounter some homeless people. When I picked up the paper one day to see a death notice and how that person had died it really bothered me. He was a troubled guy, mentally ill, but really nice too. Then I met a guy I knew when he was a kid. He'd done several tours in Iraq. I seemed to know so many people who were out of work because of factories and jobs closing and moving overseas it all fit in with this story. Then there were stories I read about children not getting the healthcare they needed, and then met parents in that situation because of the decision of an insurance company. One night I sat down and "Broken Country" was written.
