Story behind the song
“All through my childhood I used to play these [Grange] competitions. Well, I knew that the competitions forthcoming in 1995 would be my last year of competing. I had NOTHING to play for the competitions. One night I prayed to God that he would give me something that would both touch the hearts of the audience and leave a lasting impression of who He truly is. “I can remember my first job, where I worked at what used to be Genesee Farms Dairy Marts in Batavia, NY. The hours were long and hard, sometimes closing the store and going back in at 8 the next morning,” Dusty says. “I used to live with my late grandmother at the time, where she used to have an old upright piano sitting in her foyer. I used to come home from work and just sit for about an hour or two each late night playing the piano to unwind from a day’s work. “On one of those nights at around 1:30 a.m., I started playing…anything; from “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” to “Serenade in Blue.” At around 2 in the morning, where I know I was not comprehensive of much around me, God played that particular version of How Great Thou Art through my hands that night…Needless to say that I knew right there that that song was the one. That arrangement was the one. I was never the same after that. I prayed right then and there that I would never forget the song, that it would do as I had earlier prayed, and that I would one day get a chance to record it. Finally, I have!”
