Story behind the song
One day the phrase "uno momento por favor" got stuck in my head, and I couldn't get rid of it. My band does a cover version of the New Riders of the Purple Sage song Henry when we perform live. In that song, Henry makes it back with the goods. I decided to write a song about a guy who wasn't as lucky as Henry.
Lyrics
I was driving through Sonora headed for the U.S. line A backseat full of grass a-weighin’ heavy on my mind Was a little nervous, after all ‘twas my first time But the man that I was runnin’ for said that everything was fine Pulled up to the border and the customs man was there Asked me if I had something that I wanted to declare I looked him in the eyes and firmly shook my head I thought that I had it made 'til he grabbed my arm and said… CHORUS Uno momento por favor You’re just the man we’re looking for I’d never been so scared before Shoulda put the pedal to the floor Uno momento por favor Took me to a little room and then applied the heat Said they’d found some contraband hidden in my seats I said, "There's some mistake, it’s certainly not mine" He shook his head and said, “My friend, I do believe you’re lyin’” What would happen next wasn’t really clear They said, "You’re far from home, we do things different here" Asked me who I worked for, I told ‘em, "I forget" They thought a while, and then they smiled, said, “We’re not done yet” CHORUS Uno momento por favor And then they threw me to the floor Right then I knew what lay in store If you won’t talk they’ve got the cure Uno momento por favor Into a courtroom in a dusty border town I got the impression they were gonna burn me down A soldier of fortune alone in a foreign land I had to say things hadn’t turned out quite the way I’d planned The judge he scowled at me and raised his gavel high He said that twenty years sounded about right And I was overcome by terrifying dread Fell on my knees and begged him please and this is what I said CHORUS Uno momento por favor This isn’t what I bargained for I only did it cause I’m poor To your mercy I implore Uno momento por favor
