Story behind the song
Started as a lament for post failed relationship pub moping. Musically probably initially inspired by Brel's Amsterdam. Seemed to acquire a wee Scottish twist along the way so I added a chanter to make it more obvious. Celebrates/laments the attraction of "letting the day pass right through without leaving a mark" that alcohol offers!
Lyrics
A curse upon this drought, come call some spirits out, Let's make a toast to the sick and the dead, Raise up some wrecks from this ocean of lead Chorus: Wash it down, forget for a while, wash it down, pretend you can smile, Wash it down, the bile and the spite, We'll sink like atlantis tonight Avoid the things you miss, pretend they don't exist, It's easy to do, when you sit in the dark, Let the day flow right through, Without leaving a mark Chorus Fill your head with foam, against the voyage home, Stay at your post, til you hear the last call, Then walk like a shadow, cling onto the wall Chorus There's nothing to stop us tonight, no map and no compass tonight, No ghosts and no corpses tonight
