Story behind the song
As a kid, I used to hear this poem read once in a while on Sundays while we were driving to church. Later, when my choir needed a song about paryer, I set it to music.
Lyrics
"The proper way for a man to pray," said deacon Lemuel Keys, "and the only proper attitude is down upon his knees! The only proper attitude is down upon his knees!" "No, I should say the way to pray," said Rev'rand Doctor Wise, "is standing straight with outstretched arms and rapt and upturned eyes, is standing straight with outstretched arms and rapt and upturned eyes!" "Oh, no, no, no," said Elder Slow! "Such posture is too proud! A man should pray with eyes fast closed and head contritely bowed. A man should pray with eyes fast closed and head contritely bow..." "It seems to me his hands should be austerely clasped in front, with both thumbs pointing t'ward the ground," said Rev' rand Doctor Blunt! with both thumbs pointing t'ward the ground," said Rev'rand Doctor Blunt! Last year I fell down Hodgkins well, head first!" said Cyrus Brown, with both my heels a stickin' up and my head a pintin' down! and I made a prayer right then and there! Best prayer I ever said; The prayinest prayer I ever prayed, while standing on my head! The prayin'est prayer I ever prayed a standin' on my head!"
