Artist picture
Singer/Songwriter in the tradition of classic country artists. A little humor and a whole lot of heart.
I've been writing songs since 1974. Over the past few years, I've participated in open mic's whenever possible and have become active in the Nashville Songwriters Association International ("NSAI").

Story behind the song
This song was born out of a songwriting class exercise. We all wrote to the same title and the top 2 songs "won" publishing deals (I wish!). Here's the #1 song as voted by the group.
Lyrics
Listen close and you can hear Footsteps in the hall Wipe away a teardrop See the memories on the walls Be seated at the table Where we gave thanks to the Lord We don't live here anymore Our daughter's room is up the stairs Second from the right New carpet and new curtains Fresh paint to bring it life We've not stepped a foot inside Since nineteen eighty-four We don't live here anymore The dream of every couple Is to make their house a home To cherish love and laughter Raiser their children 'til they're grown These four walls became our prison When our hearts were bruised and torn We don't live here any more In seven years of life She brought us joy beyond belief Now a recent front page headline Speaks of his release A basement window opened A child left broken on the floor We don't live here anymore With one last look behind us At the home that we've now sold We're off into the night Before the trail runs cold Our dying act won't bring her back And it might close Heaven's door We don't live here anymore © John Tolley All Rights Reserved
