Story behind the song
This is a song that my grandmother wrote. My uncle wanted to record an album one night and asked her to write him a song. She sat down and wrote this out in about 20-25 minutes and I personally thought it was solid gold the first time I heard it. She can't stand it, but I love it and felt obliged to put it on my album. It's a very simple song about a man who is caught in a rough spot. He is married and has a girlfriend on the side. She wants to leave and part of him wants to go with her, but the other part can't bear to leave the wife and kids. His girlfriend has a habit of calling him, and everytime she does, and his wife asks who it was, all he says is, "Wrong Number."
Lyrics
Sunday morning, when the phone rings,
I pick it up and hear her say,
Hello darlin', if you're not busy,
I'd like to see you today.
But when my wife asks, who was calling,
Wrong number I say,
What she don't know is that I'm meeting,
The wrong number today.
Wrong number, wrong number,
I don't know what to do,
I can't desert my family,
And I can't live without you.
Please don't press me for decisions,
There's no other way,
I'll just live in dreams of having,
The right number someday.
You want to leave town, be together,
But for now that just can't be,
You know I have two little children,
Who mean the world to me.
You saying now I don't really love you,
I don't know what to say,
All I know is that wrong number,
Is so right for me today.
Wrong number, Wrong number,
I don't know what to do,
I can't desert my family,
And I can't live without you.
Please don't press me for decisions,
There's no other way,
I'll just live in dreams of having,
The right number someday.
Yes I'll live in dreams of having,
The right number someday.
