Peter Erickson is a singer/songwriter from Norman Oklahoma and has been performs original song with many of the band he has been with over the years.
Story behind the song
Song started out as "Grease Pit Blues" written in 1977 by Glenn Uhls, but somewhere along the way it changed when I could not remember all the words to the chorus or the original melody. The song was one of the first to be recorded on a new 4 channel cassette recorder to learn how to use it and to start writing songs lyrics and melodies. Glenn's use of words in the verses were something that stuck with me as great lyrics worthy of recording.
Lyrics
Valentine Blues
Workin' in a grease pit pumpin' gas all week
Tuning up a T-Bird tryin' to make end meet
Sent my baby roses, but she found somebody new
Drowning all my sorrows, cause I get the Valentine Blues
Chorus:
I got the Valentine Blues, I got the Valentine Blues
Ain't got no money in my pocket, Cupid's arrow missed the mark
Should have bought her diamond ear rings, Cause somebody stole her heart
Ain't got nothing to lose when you're workin' with the Valentine Blues
Now I'm workin' all day in the freezin' cold
Try to keep myself together, but it's gettin' kinda old
She left me for the florist, what will I do
There ain't nothin' like working with the Valentine Blues
Chorus:
I got the Valentine Blues, I got the Valentine Blues
Ain't got no money in my pocket, Cupid's arrow missed the mark
Should have bought her diamond ear rings, Cause the florist stole her heart
Ain't got nothing to lose when you're workin' with the Valentine Blues
Well my baby done left me, she said because I could not dance
She said workin' in a grease pit, well ain't her kinda romance
Well maybe I can't a boogie, but I know when I been used
There ain't nothin' like working with the Valentine Blues
