Story behind the song
Written Dec 1999, while cramming for a U.S. History/Government exam. Formerly titled, "Ballad of 1812" because of its vague basis on Lewis and Clark and their expeditions around the time. The chorus used to go, "Are you caught up with those Indian girls (those Indian girls), do you remember me?" in reference to possible cowboy-Native-American-Indian-tie-ins. It was later changed so as to avoid possible interpretations of derogatory stereotypes and racist comments. Essentially, the song is about unrequited love. The couple separate and the partner doesn't return until it is too late. In many ways, this song captured the youth and innocence of adolescence at the time. It wasn't a particular favorite, but it was strong enough to stay around for a while. It finally ended up as the opening track on When Desires Collide.
Lyrics
In the summer, our love was fresh like snow Summer breeze in the trees, birds forever singing Come spring, suddenly everything was changing And when I turned around, you were gone As you roam into the deep unknown (the deep unknown) Are you thinking of me? Are you caught up with someone else (oh someone else) Do you remember me? I still recall the day you left my side I'll dry my eyes, 'tis not goodbye...you will return A year passes by, still no sign from you My heart is breaking - forever aching Knowing that you're still gone Come spring, I know I'm slowly dying For without you by my side, I am nothing As you roam into the deep unknown (the deep unknown) Are you thinking of me? Are you caught up with someone else (oh someone else) Do you remember me? You had to go; the hungry west was calling I'll close my eyes, pray you'll return...I'm here waiting Can you sense my loneliness across the great barren plains? When the wolverines howl to the moon can you hear me among them, calling out your name? When you come back from the deep unknown (the deep unknown) Will you remember me? Or will you come back when it's much too late (it's much too late) When nothing's left of me? Your heart was young, and I was faithful always 'Twas not goodbye, you have returned...I'm here waiting.
