Story behind the song
Composed while sipping frappucinos one afternoon at Starbucks, "8 Arms" was written specifically for the Hour of Peace segment of the annual Peace Concert held at the Singapore American School in November. The theme that year was "oppression," and thus became the basis of the song itself. Inspiration came from the Veruca Salt album title, 8 Arms To Hold You. The heart of the song is really about wanting freedom, but stylistically, it plays around with sarcasm and irony. The speaker of the song cries out that they need to be "held down" when they really want to relieved of all the pressures surrounding them. A short while after "8 Arms" was composed, it made its debut at the Peace Concert. It was performed at two other live performances afterwards, becoming a recognizable opener and frequent crowd-pleaser. The constant repetition of the words "eight arms" made the song itself easy to remember and refer to. Later, when recording for the Stars album had begun, "8 Arms" was immediately recorded and became the opening track on the album.
Lyrics
Only to be free Only to be free 8 arms, 8 arms to hold me down I need 8 arms, 8 arms to hold me down Down to... Breathe - there'll be no hands for choking See - there'll be no fantasizing Live - with a chance for being Only to be free Only to be free 8 arms, 8 arms to hold me down I need 8 arms, 8 arms to hold me down Back to where I belong Where I've been wronged 8 arms, 8 arms to hold me down I need 8 arms, 8 arms to hold me down This is...
