Story behind the song
I wrote this song around October 2003 while at Cafe Roma, a coffee place close to the UC Davis campus. There were these great black and white paintings on display...and I thought it would be quite ironic as a blurb, being that paintings are usually done with vibrant color. The lyrics were a blurb by itself, and the guitar rift was just something that had been sticking around for a while. I can't really pinpoint who it was written specifically about, but I know I was trying to write a somewhat upbeat piece (although this piece doesn't really succeed 'cause it -does- have underlying melancholy to it...). Essentially, it's about the point after a person enters a relationship and it's that point where he or she thinks, "You know, I know I'm in love, but I could just as easily walk away from it." It's about falling in love, and being unsure about it, knowing the instability of relationships and human emotion, but it's optimistic in a sense in that it doesn't want to walk away. Bottom-line, it's about falling in love, and accepting it as it is.
Lyrics
All these black and white paintings All these colorless photographs All these shadows when the sun goes down I could give it up I could give it up for you I could give it up I could give it up for you All these soundtracks scratched in solitude All these words that hang heavy like drapery All these expressions like sticky cotton candy I could give it up I coudl give it up for you I could give it up I could give it up for you You bring it up on pedestal high And I can't deny, can't deny this euphoric symphony What more do I need? What else do I need? You paint it beautifully, everything... When the night breaks sunrise When the morn glides dew delicate Don't pull the wool out from under this warmth Don't throw it all - top tipsy - rosy hurl beautiful
