Story behind the song
An angry, angsty song on identity and acceptance in modern society. "Monsters In The Brain" started out as a blurb written in early 2001. After reading a biography on Andrew Wyeth, the artist of the famous "Christina's World", the lyrics poured through, inspiring the "Andy, you're my summer dream" chorus. While part of the chorus resonates the respect for this man and what he's accomplished, the bulk of the song is really about sensitivity and wanting to break through barriers of what is seen as "should" rather than "want." "Monsters In the Brain" came at a time during high school when following the crowd started becoming trivial. Why should a person act a certain way for acceptance? Why should surperficiality be the universal environment around social interaction? It wasn't until much later that the melody came the words. The result is a driving, intense rock anthem along the veins of Radiohead's "Creep." "Monsters In The Brain" actually came close to being publicly introduced when auditions were being held for the Break Gigs in May 2002 at the Singapore American School. Coincidentally (and probably ironically), there was another performer auditioning who happened to have the first name of "Andy." With the notion that he might get the wrong idea, "Monsters In The Brain" was scrapped off the audition set list.
Lyrics
Like shattered jade upon the floor I've lost what was once before Too late to cry forever more Hidden passage from the core Stupid rhyme - why am I writing in rhyme I sound like the child I thought I lost I sound superficial - frivolous Oh, stupid rhyme - why am I writing in rhyme Andy - you're my summer dream Andy - you're not what you seem Andy - inside you're so much more Andy, Andy, I adore I sound superficial, frivolous Like a wannabe - am I deceived Why do I try when I question my skill Why is it always about me Why can't I see things differently Andy - you're my summer dream Andy - you're not what you seem Andy - inside you're so much more Andy, Andy, I adore Maybe I was born at the wrong time Maybe I've been influenced by society To which I don't belong I want to belong Andy... (But I like unique I like paradox This is my headache This is for your sake)
