Story behind the song
i mostly wrote the music and lyrics to the song "Color"... This is one among the first and earliest recordings of youth @ risk, back before there was rampant internet access to the general public, or the technological advances where CDR's of whatever your music you want to put on them could be ready made to give out to any and all musicians willing to try it. See, youth @ risk - we recorded on analog 2 inch tape. When we look back at what it cost us then to get the technology that's cheap and readily available now, we spent a flipping fortune! But i digress. The song "Color" is actually a 2 part story, i went down to church camp, yes that's right, my church campmeeting - [to write metal songs] with my electric guitar and a tiny little amplifier, and there i met up with my old buddy Rob Jernigan-who used to live in my city and go to my high school with me. He had moved to another state. But we got together at CSHC.org church campmeeting. i'd been working on piecing together this song on guitar, and Rob helped me arrange the ideas of the song, and the method of playing the chorus, because i didn't know what i was doing. And then much later back home, after beginning the recordings that were the first ones as the band we called "youth @ risk" my friend Kenneth Smith said he heard a lot of potential in the songs, and i was looking for someone to come in and make the guitar tracks sound better than just what Larry [now from the band chairleg] and i had recorded. So we went into Beaten Track studios / Haunted Pillar recordings and laid it all down with David Bradberry, who really knew how to make a guitar rig sound smooth. Kenneth wrote a part [now played by Robbie Cook] that really made the guitar sound come alive in a way it hadn't before. This was at the time, one of our most popular songs. Whenever we perform, people still ask us to play this song. Craig Hooks was the drummer back at this time, and we decided to try replicating this song, in the next form of the band, the Youth @ Risk live band, who would actually would go out and play concerts. But that's another story! ~Chuk
Lyrics
i've been thinking about my mistake
and i've been thinking about how fake
who do i want to believe
why can't i just go on and leave
don't even know what i have to do
don't even know why i miss, why i miss, why i miss - you [but i do...]
REALITY HITS ME RIGHT IN THE FACE
RUNNING ME RAGGED ALL OVER THIS PLACE
HOW COULD i KNOW THAT i HAD NO CLUE
NEVER KNEW NOW REALIZE...
i've been thinking about what to do
i've been sinking it might be to lose
made no decisions i decide for you
i couldn't wait i had to, i had to, i had to - choose [you lose]
REALITY HITS ME RIGHT IN THE FACE
RUNNING ME RAGGED ALL OVER THIS PLACE
HOW COULD i KNOW THAT i HAD NO CLUE
NEVER KNEW NOW REALIZE
i EXPLODE IN SILENT CRIES
IN THE COMPANY OF MISERY i SEE THROUGH THE LIES
TEARS REIGN AND PAIN IS THE COLOR IN MY EYES, EYES [eyes]
kill the light, kill the light
kill the light, kill the light - kill the light
REALITY HITS ME RIGHT IN THE FACE
RUNNING ME RAGGED ALL OVER THIS PLACE
HOW COULD i KNOW THAT i HAD NO CLUE
NEVER KNEW NOW REALIZE
i EXPLODE IN SILENT CRIES
IN THE COMPANY OF MISERY i SEE THROUGH THE LIES
TEARS REIGN AND PAIN IS THE COLOR IN MY EYES
it's true - i die when i look at you
i die when i look at you
i die when i look at you
