Story behind the song
Based on some ancedotes an old family friend (Russell Lawrence) told me about his younger days in the prairies during the early 1930's. During those days he'd travel around looking for work, using as his method of transportation the "poor man's limo" (as he called it) ... a freight train. I didn't actually use his stories, but the idea of the travelling intrigued me, and that lead to this song about a drifter trying to convince a fellow traveller, who happens to be a female, to join him in his journeys. They would be a "Twosome".

Lyrics and Music © By Pete Dowan (SOCAN) TWOSOME 1st VERSE: Look inside my duffel bag You will see it's empty They call you "That Tough Old Hag" But you can teach me plenty So why not ride together ? We'll both end up where ever Who knows where this train is gonna take us anyway ? Climb on board and we'll find out when night turns into day CHORUS: TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN WE CAN HAVE SOME GREAT FUN TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN YOU AND ME TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN WE CAN HAVE SOME GREAT FUN TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN YOU AND ME WAIT AND SEE 2nd VERSE: I've got my harmonica Learned it from my grampy Christened her Veronica And she sure comes in handy Whenever I am hungry We busker "Stormy Monday" If you know the words we'll play the blues into the night Rhythm of the rails'll help to make the feeling right CHORUS: TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN WE CAN HAVE SOME GREAT FUN TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN YOU AND ME TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN WE CAN HAVE SOME GREAT FUN TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN YOU AND ME WAIT AND SEE ( Veronica Harmonica) ....Solo... 3rd VERSE: See you have a shawl with you Hang it on the door hinge I will share this all with you... some peanuts and an orange We might as well enjoy this We're on the unemployed list Bet we get to see this country more than anyone They could make a movie based on all the things we've done CHORUS: TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN WE CAN HAVE SOME GREAT FUN TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN YOU AND ME TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN WE CAN HAVE SOME GREAT FUN TWOSOME ON A FREIGHT RUN YOU AND ME WAIT AND SEE END....
