Stinkylips
Stinkylips is a solo underground rapper from Brisbane, Australia.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Stinkylips was introduced to Rap in 1988 (Beastie Boys) whilst living in Tasmania. It wasn’t until a year or so later after moving to a small mining town in Central Queensland, and being given a tape of NWA and 2 Live Crew, that he started writing rhymes for fun.
After the passing of a few more years and exposure to the sounds of RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Ice-T and the Geto Boys (to name the main ones), Stinkylips bought a cheap 4 track tape recorder, keyboard and microphone and started laying down some really bad tracks and rapping with his buddy (in bad American accents) about Gangsta themes.
It was about ’96 when Stinky started to lose his US accent and write rhymes about his life and experiences. This was largely due to hearing other styles of Rap such as, The Brotherhood (U.K.) and the Homebrews compilation (Aus).
A few portable recording systems, keyboards and microphones later, Stinkylips started to take his hobby more seriously and completed an Audio Engineering course (after moving to Brisbane) in 2002.
After some indecisive times with regards to career paths, Stinkylips has finally got a collection of tracks together on an EP entitled: Stinkylipus Maximus, which is entirely written, engineered and produced by Stinkylips. The EP is available through Ovaproof Records
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Only done a few open mics around Brissy and got a pretty good response. I'm yet to perform in front of a large crowd.
