Band/artist history

I've always been in tune with the times. I played in acoustic duos through the Seventies when Disco was big. When acoustic singer-songwriters became popular, I formed a band; then when bands led by singer-songwriters got big, I quit the business for a few years.

Have you performed in front of an audience?

Every time I play I'm live.

I play the occasional Open Stage. I like to improvise, and not every musician wants to go beyond the stuff they've memorized. It takes a special kind of musician to follow the band leader into a musical ditch - or hopefully get them out!

Your musical influences

I grew up with the Beatles. I was in Middle School when they hit and College when they quit. Talk about your "formative years".

I'm sure you can find traces of lots of influences in my songs. Various songs have been compared to John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkle, Guided By Voices, Bob Dylan, Moody Blues, XTC. I've never consciously tried to imitate anyone.

I love Richard Thompson, Buddy Guy and Miles Davis but I sure can't play like them!

What equipment do you use?

Songs have often started on an acoustic guitar, but that's not necessarily how they end up. Right now I have a 1980's Ovation and a beautifully warm and balanced new Godin guitar. Both are acoustic-electric. I also have a modified '80s Washburn electric. Gear isn't that important to me.

Basically, I use what I got - a feeble brain, my heart of stone, my 15 fingers and my sarcastic and oh, so cynical, mouth.

I get ideas from everywhere and use whatever I can to enhance the song.

Necessity is the Mama...

Anything else?

Thanks for listening to songs that haven't been pounded into your head until they're so familiar that they become a musical security blanket. There will eventually be a wide variety of music here - sensitive solo acoustic songs, noise tracks, songs with a band, a cappella songs, music made from loops and samples, instrumental pieces... so you're sure to hear something that you don't like!

And maybe something you like, too - let me know. Enjoy!
