Inspiration can hit at the strangest times. Lately I've been inspired by some pretty offbeat memories, experiences, readings and ideas. My hope is that I can blend them with the words in my heart and stake my claim of originality. That being said, this is overflow parking. Here, have a seat.
Band/artist history
I've been playing guitar since I was about 14, but I've been writing words since much younger. Honestly I would consider myself much more of a songwriter than a guitarist, but since I've managed to finagle myself a position as both in my current band I've been quite pleased with the circumstances of my growth as an "artist". I still write "poetry" and short stories when I have the motivation, but songs are definitely my preferred method of expression. My band has sorta died down for the moment, but I'm experience a sudden burst of musical creativity. Oddly enough, however, I'm going through a weird lyrical drought. If you've noticed, my last two pieces have been instrumentals. But I've been working on songs, really. I'll probably update with something new within the next week.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I have only played solo live once, and it was in my English class so it doesn't really count. I'd be rather terrified to ever do it again, not to mention I'd feel guilty performing solo in front of a paying audience. Update: Alright, so I'm playing shows now, haha. It's not as bad as I remember it, and I've improved a lot since then. Cool.
Your musical influences
Paul Westerberg, Randy Stonehill, Johnny Rzeznik, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Billy Corgan, Raine Maida, Bob Hartman, Yusef Islam, Bruce Cockburn.
What equipment do you use?
$10 microphone, my guitar and MY SOUL. Well, also random old recordings I continue to dig up from my computer. There is serious joy in simplicity. Thoreau would be proud. I talk to him everyday through the little door in the bathroom window.
Anything else?
I miss my four track, and chances are you will too eventually. Sometimes I really hate the unbelievably horseshitty quality of these songs, but I guess I'm vainly hoping that at least some people will be able to hear a good song underneath the feedback, background noise, poorly tuned guitar and often straining voice.
