squid one

Squid one is a harder rock quartet from Calgary, Alberta. The lineup includes: Spencer Lillo (vocals, guitar) Blake Turnbull (guitars/backing vocals), Mitchell Moore (Bass/Backing vocals) and Mike Lang (percussion). The members of this project come from varying backgrounds, with very different musical tastes which results in an original sound.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
August 07 2002 - After playing in a couple of projects with Matt, the latest, an acoustic rock project with Spencer, Blake meets up with long-time friend Mike to discuss possible project which turns out to be Squid one, and the collaboration begins from then. Mid-September 2002- Matt goes to Nova Scotia to travel the east, looking for the meaning of life. Late-September 2002- Squid one enlists in the bass-master skills of Austin Olsen. Early-October 2002- Oblivious-a new song is concieved and is soon to be on this website!! Mid-November - Austin decides to commit all of his time to his first loves - guitar and Studded for Pleasure - The hunt begins again for bassist #3. November 21, 2002 - Squid one finds their bassist in Mitchell Moore, who after one practise, is taken under the wing of Squid one. November 30, 2002 - 5 original songs are recorded in mike's basement, soon to be perfected and on this site. February 23, 2003 - A new song is recorded and released on the website May 23, 2003 - Preliminary work begins on the infamous demo that has taken s1 8 months to begin. S1 is scheduled to hit the studio on May 25th. May 25, 2003 - Initial tracks for the song Ambition are laid down, and so far, so good! June 10, 2003 - Mastering is the only step remaining in completing the first track on the new 4 song EP. Ambition is soon to be on this site! June 21, 2003 - Thanks to all of those that made the "first" squid one performance enjoyable. July 5, 2003 - Final touches are made on the CD and 3 new songs are soon to be on this website!! July 6, 2003 - song "Oblivious" is released on this website. July 19, 2003 - 36 degree weather could not stop this band from playing its first show nearly flawlessly, but mike did get an excellent wife-beater tan out of the experience. August 10, 2003, the band takes a 2 week hiatus to travel. Novemeber 8, 2003 - The band is working on a predemo-demo, with new songs soon on this website. We also have a gig in Red Deer on November 15th. We will be on stage between 730 and 800. $5 at the door if you say you are with the Calgary band. November 20, 2003 - The band wishes to thank all those that came out to the Red Deer and Shamrock shows. Red Deer went well despite sound problems and we won the first round of Band Warz. The semi-finals are on Dec 8th so hopefully you can come and check it out. Also, we have updated the CD and now this sampler comes with 6 songs, and is only $3. We will upload songs here soon. Dec 15th 2003 - So we lost band warz (only marginally) and now with exams almost done, we are off and booking some more. We are going to be playing at the Gate in January, check "on tour" for more info. Jan 11th 2004 - New Songs, 2 of them in the music section. Come to our show on the 30th, see us for 5 bucks off the door price. Jan 31 2004 - Thanks to everyone that came to our show on Friday, you all helped to make it a wicked night. We sold all the CD's we made, and for all you keen fans, another sampler is in the works, look for it to be done in about 3 weeks. We will be booking some more in february, so look for those dates. Verns, with knife fight and MSG. However, we gave no one any notice. Despite this, a few of our best fans came out, and we took home a phat 35 bucks. Thanks for coming, and next time we will try to give you more notice! Mar 5, 2004 - we have a new website, it is under construction but check it out @ http://squidone.webhop.net thanks to my cousin mike for the creation of this site! Mar 11, 2004 - A special shoutout to the drunk people that danced at our show last night, your enthusiasm made it all worth while. May 1, 2004 - So played our last show (in this current configuration) and we now say goodbye to spence. We are going to take the summer off, write some new stuff and mix it up a bit, bring in matt moore on bass, we will keep ya updated. A huge thanks to all of those that came to any of our shows and bought a CD....hopefully we shall keep going once september hits....have a good summer!

Your musical influences
Squid one is essentially rock driven but with influences from all ends of the spectrum. Squid One's sound is evolving, and through this evolution process, the original influences of 90's grunge is being replaced by the heavier sounds of the new milennium, which are countered by melodic vocals.
What equipment do you use?
Epiphone, Ibanez, and Gibson guitars, Ibanez basses, fender showman and Marshall heads, Randall cabs, fender twin reverb, peavy amps, Pearl drums, zjilidan and Sabian cymbals, vic firth 5B wood tip sticks.
