Spool was formed in 1996 by Aaron Bachelder, Michael Thomas Jackson and Joel Lambdin to explore free improvisation as an outlet for creating new music.

Currently Bachelder and Jackson are the core members with past and present collaborators including Bob Holub, Speight Rhue, Brian Osborne, Adrian Dimond, Eugene Chadbourne, Lathan Hardy, Matt Smith and Coa Schwab.
