South of Nowhere is a cutting edge band formed by six Air Force members on temporary duty in Saudi Arabia. We started out as a cover band whose purpose was just to entertain the troops, but we soon started writing our own material, and as a result, we recorded a live album.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
South of Nowhere was a formed on an Air Force temporary duty assingment to Saudi Arabia in late 1999. Jason Awalt (vocals), and Ryan Smith (guitar) found each other shortly after they got off the plane and started writing songs. The two then recruited Bran Bankston (keyboards), Jim Holley (drums), Ed Burke (guitar), and George Howell (bass). Due to the bands situation (in the middle of the Saudi Arabian desert and no equipment to speak of), they managed to borrow some instraments and other gear, talked the Royal Air Force into letting them practice in an airplane hangar in the middle of nowhere, and began to practice. The original intent of the band was to give the men and women stationed overseas a little peice of home. Due to the response from the troops, South of Nowhere decided to cut a live album. (The album had to be live do to no multi-track recording equipment) Three of the bands members are seperating from the military, with another one soon to follow, so South of Nowhere will be coming to your town very soon.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Our most special moment was playing live in Saudi for New Years 2000.
