Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
SoundGauge are a four-piece rock band from the outer-east suburbs of Melbourne. The band consists of drummer Clinton McLean (17), bassist Kyle Evans (18), guitarist Matt Richmond (16), and vocalist and guitarist Mitch Scott (18). In the past year, the band has played at venues such as EV's and The Arthouse, sharing the stage with the core of the up-and-coming rock scene, including bands such as Gyroscope, Tiltmeter, The Tall Poppies and MightyBoy.
The SoundGauge sound has been likened to a wide variety of alt. rock artists, including Pearl Jam and Silverchair. As well as these, the band is influenced by a wide variety of other rock artists including Nirvana, Metallica, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Grinspoon and Bodyjar. The band says it simply likes to "turn it up to 11 and rock!"
The band started out in late 2002, four mates getting together to make some tunes and have fun, under the name "Trolley Race". After writing and perfecting some raw tunes, the band decided to record an Independent Demo, the 5-Track "Clean up in Aisle 5". Although a limited release (100 Copies), the CD was received well. After this, the band started playing a few shows, and began writing more mature-minded music. In accordance with this, a decision was made to change the bands name - "SoundGauge" was born.
In early 2004, their song "The System" broke into SynFM's "The Hoist" Top 10 Most Requested Australian songs, where it stayed for 6 week, reaching as high as number The band has also made numerous appearances on 90.7 SynFM and Channel 31's SynTV.
The band is currently planning for its first official EP, to be released late 2004/early 2005 and is looking positively to the future, with plans to play more shows and meet more bands. Building a loyal fanbase and doing what they love remains strong in their minds.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Playing live is where it's at. We've played at a few venues around Melbourne such as Ev's, The Arthouse and TLC. Will be looking to gig hard once we release our as-yet-untitled EP in late 2004/ early 2005.
