SoulsSun expresses his artistic diversity as a songwriter, arranger, producer and vocal performer. A self taught pianist, he also plays saxophone, drums and percussion. Captivated by many R&B greats, some of his most impressionable influences include: Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Sly and The Family Stone, Parliament / Funkadelic, Rick James, Prince, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, John Legend and Kanye West to name a few. Although he has encountered many musicians who have helped him develop as an artist, he pays special homage to friends Nick Hawkins, Eugene "Beaver" Howard, Rudy Love, cousin "Lord" Byron Pyles and the Brown Brothers Mike and Harold Brown. As an artist, SoulsSun is very giving of his talent and time. He believes in the promoting and supporting of all independent artists. In his quest to live by his beliefs, SoulsSun has worked with local artists- Rapper B-Sick, the vocalist Jo Beng, the writer-poet Mo'Kha and Everett B. Walters as a member of their jazz group "CCB" (Colored Coated Brown). He has also had the privalege of sharing the stage with international recording artists Chaka Khan, The Temptations and Ali Woodson. He has more recently along with Mo'Kha, appeared with Jo Beng, opening for such acts as Al Green, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry and Erykah Badu. His discerning ear and attention to detail has given him the reputation of being contemplative, meticulous and gifted. His abstract outlook on life and outside the box thinking help to form his distinct and unique sound.
Band/artist history
I started music at a young age in Kansas following in the footsteps of my father, uncles and aunts, all of whom are very musically inclined. Like most musicians I started in church. I went on to perform in my high school symphonic, jazz and marching bands. After graduating high school I received a music scholarship to attend Baker University. I then went on to pursue my musical career performing with the local artists I grew up listening to.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I do play live. I play keyboards and sing. I perform with local original artists as an opening act at the House of Blues and I perform with a jazz group which has appeared at various casinos and lounges.
Your musical influences
All the 45's and albums of my father's down in the basement. Everyone from the Mommas and Poppas, Elvis Presley and Tom Jones to Stevie Wonder , Donny Hathaway, George Benson and Al Jarreau.
What equipment do you use?
I use Roland xp series and Korg Triton keyboards, along with Shure microphones and Acid recording software.
Anything else?
I play several instruments including the sax and drums. Give me a little time and I'll be playing bass and rhythm guitar! I would like to one day have my own studio and record for television and film.
