We're a rock band from the Kent, Ohio area. It's difficult to classify us, so we'll let our music speak for itself.Band/artist history
Sneakthief was initially formed in the August of 2000 in Kent, Ohio, brainchild of Mike Watson, guitarist and lead vocalist, and Alex Robinson, bassist. Then known as Conduit 4, they were joined by long-time friend and former ZuZuPaPa bandmate Mark Sowers on congas and backing vocals, and Will Ullinger on drums. These 4 high-school kids blended their individual influences, ranging from U2 and Eve 6 to Rage Against the Machine and Zebrahead. Driven by Mike's unique lyrical style and musical vision, they created a sound all their own, which for lack of a better term they christened "Avant-Garde Alternative". Their frequent performances have garnered an intensely wide range of comparisons ("an angry Dave Matthews", "Alice in Chains feelin' the funk") and descriptions (their favorite being "Gerbil Rock".)
They played their first show in January of 2001 at the Robin Hood Inn in Kent, simultaneously making their 4-song demo, "80 If We're Lucky" available for purchase, releasing it on their own Spontaneously Combustible Records label. After another show a few weeks later took a break for a few months, in order to perfect their set. They reappeared in the early summer, and have been playing frequently in the Kent area ever since. When bassist Alex left for college in August of 2001, he was replaced by Biff Bucks, who had been practicing with the band throughout the summer.
While still known as Conduit 4, they released their first full-length album "This Side of Up" in late May of 2002. Featuring twelve tracks of original music, this CD was completely self-produced and recorded, and released independently. It received many positive reviews in local publications and helped increase the band's regional following considerably.
The band began recording their second CD Thanksgiving weekend of 2002. They completed recording on January 3, 2003, and spent the next several months carefully mixing the tracks to obtain the most professional sound possible. Again self-produced and recorded, this CD represents a quantum leap forward for the band both in songwriting and performance as well as recording and production. They plan to release this new CD, featuring 10 brand-new original songs on May 3rd in the Rathskeller at Kent State University. At this show they intend to abandon the name Conduit 4, releasing the disk under their new name Sneakthief. In addition to changing the band's name, they are currently searching for a new guitarist, so that Watson can step up and take over frontman duties full-time. They believe that this, along with their new self-titled CD, will take them to their next level of success.
Throughout their existence Sneakthief has maintained a strong vision and motivation to strive for excellence, energy and originality in both their music and live performances. Their dedication keep their shows fresh, funny and entirely original has made them one of the fastest-growing acts in Northeast Ohio.Have you performed in front of an audience?We play mostly around the Kent/Akron/Cleveland Ohio, but we're striving to expand our territory.
