Budget Budget

A melancholy little tune with an entirely improvised solo perfectly grabbing a feeling of loss often felt after the budget!

Acoustic Guitar

Small Talk is actually a combination of various collaborative/solo efforts purely within the confines of my home studio, the majority of these pieces come from working with Mike Barclay a long time friend and collaborative partner, the music is actually in a variety of styles and forms the pair of us not being the kind to wallow in our own creations and then re-hash them.
Band/artist history
Small Talk is a nebulous entity only existing when we can get it together and make up some new stuff (or restructure and flesh out older stuff). The "band" (we have never really thought of ourselves as a band in the classic definition of the word) started in (approximately) 1997 when I started work on the lyrics for a concept album and my friend Mike Barclay offered to help, I immediately agreed and three months of lyricising began. This was followed by much begging around our more musical friends (at the time I had been playing guitar for six months) asking them to compose tunes for our hard written lyricisms. We failed to stir the imagination of anyone and so I began learning to play the guitar better in earnest and much college study ensued, in the process the lyrics were lost...so, not to be defeated in the year 2000 Mike and myself re-convened with acoustic guitars on a clifftop and improvised with reckless abandon entertaining passing dog walkers with Tragically Hip-esque pop-rock, this led me to purchase a digital recording system and Small Talk moved into the studio experimenting with various styles of music and arrangements of guitar/bass/drum-machine, which then simplified and distilled down to the two acoustic guitars approach we had originally worked with, although we are currently opening up again to do music in the way it feels best not constrained by a specific instrumental arrangement.
