Band/artist history
Skin Candle began in 1999 when cousins Tyler(bush)King and Stephen Phillips began playing guitar together. It did not take them long to develop a love for their instruments. Soon it was obvious to them that they needed to start a band. One day at school Bush was talking to drummer Leo Taylor about jamming together. After the first day it was obvious that Skin Candle had found their drummer. Some months later, after playing with several bass players, the band was introduced to bassist, Josh Ayers. He fit in perfectly. The Line up was now complete. They played a few small gigs with many different names (Underhand, Stillborn, Half-Life, and Stigma to name a few...) but they still needed time to practice.
After a couple of months with no shows, the band played a small talent exhibition as Stigma. They had improved their sound drastically. Skin Candle concreted their status as local heroes in the small town of Oneida, TN by cutting their first c.d. With this they acquired quite a following. With the pounding heaviness of "Only Human", the haunting beauty of "Portrait", and the tugging frustration of "Fixxx", the CD aided in scoring Skin Candle almost any gig they want to play, and still does. Two years after the green, inexperienced cousins played their first note as a team, Skin Candle is a well-oiled machine. The pounding, effortless double bass beats of Leo Taylor accent the wall of sound built by Josh Ayers and Stephen Phillips as Tyler King belts out the sometimes melodic harmonies, sometimes hostile vocal roars.
-Brandon Reagon.
That was written by a friend of the band, Brandon Reagon.
*here is an update to add on to it*
The band played many shows over the next couple of years. But now it was time to release a new cd full of new songs. The band Spent a year and a half in the studio. This is mostly due to technical difficulties, resulting in all of the songs being lost and having to be re-recorded. The Cd was released in early 2003. It was Titled Skin Candle-"Tickling The Ovaries." Prior to the release of this cd, Skin Candle had just earned their spot in their local music scene, but the Cd insured their position. Unfortunately, Skin Candle began playing less and less shows in the year of 2003. The Band kept themselves out of the limelight so that they could continue to write new songs. However, upon popular demand Skin Candle has promised to come back in full force in 2004. In the summer of 2004 be sure to look for Skin Candle touring around the east coast.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We love to play live. The majority of our shows are played in the southeast, primarily knoxville, TN. But we will travel in distance if the show promises to be good.
Your musical influences
We have many influences within the band. The members like to take a very open minded approach to music, whether it is listening to it or playing it. It is hard to say what our influences are but I am gonna try:
Soundgarden, Tool, 70's and 80's rock, Mudvayne, Tori Amos, Slipknot, Live, Dream Theater, Nirvana, and megadeth to name a few.
What equipment do you use?
Marshall, Gibson Epiphone, Ibanez, Hartke, Pearl, zildjian, sabian, paste, dw,
Anything else?
