Ambient

skincage is a one-man noise/ambient/looping project in studio and live incarnations. i've been workng as skincage for a little over 11 years, in various locations. people have called what i do everything from "dark ambient" to "cinematic isolationism," whatever that means! i just call it "skincage." my recordings are typically the result of meticulous studio work but when i play live i explore the moment with whatever hardware and chance materials i can use. my live approach usually revolves around the creation and mutation of loops because it's a good way to explore things from different perspectives. hope you dig what you hear, thanks for listening. p.s. headphones if you've got 'em.
Band/artist history
i started out making collages on a borrowed 4-track when i was about 17. i wouldn't let you listen to most of that stuff now but it was what i needed to do at the time. i picked up some used gear and after messing around a lot i recorded a tape ("Xanadu in Ruins") based on a very special painting. eventually i moved up to a computer studio and self-released a CDR called "Axon" which was later picked up, remastered, and distributed by Malignant Records on a sub-label called Antibody. that got me a wider audience and now i am happy to know people worldwide who like what i'm doing.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
lately it's mostly local but i've played in providence, brooklyn, and oakland as well. i always enjoy it even when my equipment inevitably gets confused and fails in some way, forcing me to be more creative. i really enjoy any chance to work with someone else live, as well.
Your musical influences
when i was young i would always rather listen to oldies than try to keep up with the radio. with puberty i got into some pretty angry music which, while kinda goofy to me now, led me slowly toward electronic and experimental music. i'm one of those people who got into AFX and Coil via Nine Inch Nails, and i'm not ashamed of that. a lot of good people turned me on to a lot of good music, for which i am forever thankful. nowadays i'm into a little of everything and a complete list would be very, very long. i find beauty in a lot of strange places, let's put it that way.
What equipment do you use?
the studio is basically a pc system revolving around an m-audio delta66 card, preamp, compressor, and i monitor via my hifi, which is apparently very evil but i do it anyway because it makes sense to me to listen to my music on the same set i listen to other people's music on. sound sources are a wide range: radios, tape machines, turntables (i don't know how to scratch but i am learning how to play other things with the turntables) circuit-bent instruments, homemade instruments from scavenged materials, contact microphones, and an assortment of "ethnic" instruments. live rig is based on an electrix repeater, a couple of 80s reverbs, guitar processor, kaoss pad, and a little mixer that has just enough complexity to allow for feedback paths within the various effects loops. when in doubt, i just play the mixer.
Anything else?
always interested to find collaborators, co-conspirators, and deep listeners. you may also find me at: http://www.skincage.com http://blog.myspace.com/skincagedronezone skincage at gmail dot com.
