sketchy beats

February 03, 2006
Sketchy Beats is the moniker adopted in 2003 by the DJ's/Producers Dom Ahtuam aka Dlay and Justin Berman for their joint productions. The duo met in London in 2001 while working at the now-defunct record distributor Prime and formed a strong friendship through their shared love of DJing and techno music. Spurred on by many a mad night out at parties such as Lost, System & Ultimate Base, they started promoting their own night Futec in 2003. Held at the Bang Bar, Basingstoke in conjunction with local promoters Jaks Records, this successful night ran for three months and included guests from Primate Recordings, Hydrophonic Recordings and Technosis. However, both Dom and Justin were beginning to grow disillusioned with the UK techno scene and sought out a new, more interesting sound which they found in the form of tech house. At the same time, they decided to start producing tracks together, each having set up a small home studio previously in 2002 and so Sketchy Beats was born... Since then, they have been working consistently in the studio together producing electronica, electro and minimal house music as well as DJing out at various events. In 2003-4, Dom played at parties held by A Kollection of Kool, Natural Elements, Propagandaa Promotions,Sizzle & Makoomba. Justin also played at the party held by Propagandaa Promotions & for Tribal Underground in Hastings. In 2005, they joined the ranks of the Genetix DJ agency based in South London and in August of this year they played at their night "Another Dimension". Currently they are concentrating on the production side of things with further DJ appearances planned for 2006
