as far as Hip Hop goes, guys like KRS One, Nas and Common Sense come to mind as immediate influences...they're the reason why I picked up pad and pencil in the first place...Im heavy into old school 70's-80's RnB...Earth, Wind & Fire and the Gap Band being two of my favorites...What equipment do you use?
