Hi my name is Shaun Friedman and I've been "making beats" seriously since I was 16 yrs old. Making a beat to me is putting down my thoughts, emotions, and feelings in a different kind of way. These beats can be great for song writers and lyricists who want to write about something real. On the flip side, I always make it a point to vary my styles and make tracks that vary in Tempo, arrangment, and instruments. When I'm creating a beat I use sounds from all across the world. I try to bring to life every instrument I use. I try to use each drum hit and instrument in a unique way, and attempt to instill a level of emotion in each track. Each track I make has it's own individual feel. I usually like putting down a drum track, then adding a bass line and other instruments. Trumpets, harmonicas, Sitars, Hip Hop Drums, Orchestra, .WAV Sample Files from the Internet, Ethnic Kits, Sound effects, synthesized bass and guitar bass are all fair game. Any sound I hear can be used in it's own way to "make a beat," or in other words form a complete composition. Music is my passion.
Your musical influences
Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, Sublime, Dave Matthews Band, DMX, Radiohead, Biggie, Tupac, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Nas, Offspring, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, Ziggy Marley, Three Six Mafia, Michael Jackson, Juvenille, Linkin Park, JAY-Z, Jimi Hendrix, Snoop, Eminem. Everything I've heard has influenced me in their own way, From a Classical Mozart Concert to a 50 Cent Concert.
What equipment do you use?
The Roland Fantom X8, Fruity Loops 5 Producer Edition, the MRS-802 Multi Track Recording Studio, and a Rode Studio Condenser Microphone. The Fantom and the MRS are both USB compatible and have their own programs. I use these Altec Lansing Computer headphones with the Fantom and other machines; they sound pretty good. I also have independent M-Audio speakers using balanced audio cables. In my fathers studio where I started producing as a teenager,I used Peformer 5.02 for Track Recording, Kurzweil and Korg Keyboards, a Roland Sound Machine, and a Proteus Sound Machine. In there I got experience with Reel to Reel Recording, as well as Multi Track Recording with a DAT Cassette. (now I have Hard Disk Recording and I can synch with Midi Time Code) I also worked with many effect processors. When I was a young kid in 1985, my dad had and still does have a keyboard called the Emulator, which at the time was a huge leap in technology. I've also used the Yamaha DX-7 Keyboard.
