"At first glance, Shannon Thomas' abnormally normal life may have you wondering if this 23-year-old actually has anything interesting to say, anything unique to bring to America's diverse music scene. In a delightfully candid way, Shannon lets her lyrics do the talking, offering up her vulnerability just as much as her strength, her sorrow along with her joy. She lets honesty take center stage. On the surface her message might appear light, framed by the theme of youthful (mostly unrequited) love, but upon closer inspection you find a refreshing mix of life-lessons learned, sometimes the hard way.
Shannon's catchy piano-based tunes stem from time spent studying the infectious sounds of artists from her own generation, like Vanessa Carlton and Hanson. Pretty melodies complement her thoughtful, relatable, and often-quirky lyrics, making the listener appreciate the wisdom of common sense, showcased in a not-so-common way. This is not bubblegum pop. It is the kind of popular music that makes fans think.
Shannon has captivated audiences in Oklahoma at venues such as Bricktown Live in OKC and The Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, and was selected for a featured spot at Diversafest in 2005. Her contact list includes active fans from as far away as Brazil and the U.K.
Shannon plans to release "Brainstorms," a full-length independent album, in March 2006. Recorded at Self Titled Entertainment in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, she laid down each piano track then worked with studio musician and producer John Conrad on the rest of the instrumentation. John is an incredibly talented 19-year-old prodigy who instinctively understood the sound Shannon wanted to create with songs she usually performs in an acoustic setting. The result is a unique, solid, upbeat album, full of much more depth than you'd expect from a young artist at the beginning of her career."Have you performed in front of an audience?I play a couple times a month in Tulsa at several different venues. I recently put a band together, so I can't wait to start performing with them!
Your musical influences
I love all kinds of music, but the biggest influences I have come straight out of my own generation. Within the past few years, artists like Vanessa Carlton, Hanson, & Michelle Branch have cultivated this particular genre that has really inspired me. Melody is the driving force behind their songs.What equipment do you use?
My keyboard is a Korg Triton Studio. And I use the standard Shure mics.Anything else?
