Sceptical C

Hi there and thanks for the interest of reading my bio. This should give you a glimpse of how my hobby got out of hand! My name is Corné van der Heijden, I’m 27 and was born 27 February 1980 on the beautiful island of Curacao. I grew up over there and lived there for 19 years. After watching how close friends played cd’s and spinned some records, I decided to start learning how this was done. My friends learned me allot about mixing bubbling with some sweet reggae and so on. Cause there were so many styles played on Curacao. So after a while of practice I got my first gig in 1994. People heard my mixing skills and booked me allot for house- and school parties. After getting enough credit for this, I had to stop playing cause of school. It was either finishing my school first or getting a job! So after being out of the scene for almost 4 years, I started playing again at some of my classmates house parties. I still played at home allot, but my goal was to reach a higher level of playing. And for that I couldn’t stay on Curacao. But if I went abroad, the risk of having to start all over again was really big. So after thinking allot about it, I decided to sell my DJ’ing equipment, thinking this was the last I would have ever seen of it. In June 1999 I moved to Eindhoven, the Netherlands. I came over to get a degree in Computer Science. After my semester had started and I had made some new friends in town, I started going out allot on “Stratumseind”. This was the street in E-town where all the café’s and clubs were. This was all new for me, cause in Curacao we didn’t have something like that! But ok, after 1 year of going out, my eyes got caught on a piece of paper, taped to the door of one of the café’s I went to allot. This was “Café Repelsteel”. On the paper it said : “ DJ GEZOCHT” which ment for me that I might still have a chance to grow in the business. I walked up to the DJ that was playing that night, and asked him what the needed experience was for the job. Well, let’s just say that I didn’t start out immediately as a DJ, but even though it was soon enough. In 2000 I was back on the decks! And I can tell you, this felt so good! I was know as DJ explicit. Playing the best, all of the best beats! So after doing this for a while, I was getting bored of playing other people’s records and started making bubbling remixes with a software program called Fasttracker. After some creations I played the tracks in the café and watched how the people went wild on the them. This gave me a good feeling about making these tracks and pushed me forward to continue doing this. After working there for a period of almost 3 years, my highest peak of that moment was Queensnight 2002. There was an outdoor stage where some of the DJ’s of “stratumseind” could play the music they played in there café. It was put together like this so there was music for everybody who walked around there that night. I had the honor to be the closing DJ of that night. The crowd went wild on the beats I played in my set that night. It was a mixture between my own bubbling tracks and of course some of the next styles : - R&B - Hip Hop - Bubbling - Merengue - Salsa - House - Club - Drum & Bass - 2Step After catching a glimpse of how this felt, spinning records in the café, never felt like that night again! That year I came in contact with an open air party that was held on “Stadhuisplein” in E-town named SHINE. This was a festival of different kinds of music. From old school hip hop to drum&bass, and so on. But on the main stage there were some artists playing a kind of music with so much bass, that was kind of new for me. But so much BASS and diversity in sounds. At first I thought that it was house/club that was played on a high pitched level. I really liked the sound and went to SHINE the year after again!(Shine 2001and 2002) My friends whom had gone to lots of techno parties already, brought me up, to what I had been missing out for a long time that I was playing in the café. They told me about there stories of how big those parties were, and how good the music was that the DJ’s played at those parties. SOthey desided it was time for me to taste the real techno beats. And I LOVE TECHNO 2002 was the eye opener for me. I walked in with a DJ set of Redhead and I was blown away from the first second! This was what I wanted too, playing in such a large place with so much sound, and of course my own productions! After that night my quest for producing this sound started. Since the moment I started making Techno my artist name changed from DJ explicit to Sceptical C. Or better know as Corné van der Heijden. I started producing' some good hard & Funky Techno. Believe it or not!!!! From bubbling to Techno! Although it was a big change for me, this was one kind of music that felt so good to dance and listen to. Every time that I heard the Techno beats pass by my ears I got the goosebumps of the so symphonic music. It's not one kind of music you just listen to, it's the kind you feel, the kind you can put yourself into. It's the kind of music you filter out all the sounds and just analyse each and every sound you hear in the records. The step of producing Techno was such a big challenge for me. But I was sure that I could make it with the right help. I started out with some music programs on my computer, which were : Fasttracker, Madtracker, Fruityloops, Cubase SX, Ableton live. These programs have helped me so much with the producing of my music. Last but not least, the help of a good friend of mine, Tachini , got me on the way on how to work with these programs. Day and night I worked with these programs to get to know what I was doing and how I was doing it. After one year of listening en making it myself, I finally reached a level of Techno, that is able to make you move your body on the dance floor till you drop. It's a mixture between Hard en pumpin' Techno, but with such a funky swing! Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Yes, I'm a Live Act. I usually play on Techno party's!! Techno is just such a music that you get really attached to if you hear all the climaxes building up, and just then the hard basses kick back in!
Your musical influences
Well it's a diversity of music that goes from Hip hop to Latin sounds like Merengue, to bubbeling sounds from Dj Moortje and so on. When talking about my techno influences it would be a mixture of Speedy J, Dj Rush, Marco Remus and Chris Liebing but still in my own style.
What equipment do you use?
Ableton Live , Fruity loops, Behringer Mixer Audiorack, Roland MC303, Behringer BCF2000, Behringer BCR2000, Korg Electribe R MKII
