Saul Tobin is a concert composer, currently in his second year at the University of Southern California. He is on a full scholarship pursuing degrees in both composition and philosophy. Saul currently studies under Stephen Hartke.
Saul's music takes after Paul Hindemith, Elliott Carter, Gustav Mahler, and Arvo Pärt. He also draws heavily on the sounds of modern jazz — Maria Schneider, Michael Brecker, and Mats Holmquist — and traditional Jewish music. One musician, after playing Saul's music, remarked that, "It's unlike anything I've seen or heard before." Saul's works include a woodwind quartet Fundamental Structure, charts for jazz big band, numerous small chamber pieces, and most recently a piano sonata.
Saul also plays jazz and funk trumpet and writes poetry. What equipment do you use?
Finale 2008 on a Mac Book Pro with an Edirol PCR-M1. I play on a Bach 10.5C mouthpiece, 10.5DW for lead work. My ax is a Yamaha heavy-wall Xeno trumpet; she is gorgeous. I also use a Kanstul Signature copper-bell flugel.
