A moving ballad with a simple swing beat about a lost friend.

R&B/Soul/Pop

When Saturn was five, if you awoke early enough on a Sunday morning, you'd catch him outside on the porch, his tiny feet buried in his grandmother's high heels and her Sunday hat falling lopsided on his head, singing out his favorite gospel hymns to the top of his lungs. Fast forward twenty years and he's lost the heels and the hat, but he's still singing. Writing songs that run the gamut of genres from pop to dance to urban, Saturn infuses his own funky blend of pop/urban music with a raw edge and sensuality that is heavily influenced by such icons as Prince and Madonna. "It's a sultry, pop-laden mix that is a throwback to the late "80s sound. Think R&B. Think jazz. Think club music think again! It's ART." (Ed Mannix, Outmusic) Though Saturn started writing songs when he was 12, it wasn't until much later he decided to step out on faith and pursue his dream of music. He graduated with honors from Texas Christian University with a degree in TV/Film/Theatre. He's had leading roles in numerous professional shows including "Six Degrees of Separation", "Angels in America", and "Much Ado About Nothing", and he's also starred in the Independent films "Playin' for the Kitty" and "The Last Days of Winter". While busy acting, he won awards with his short stories and screenplays and worked alongside J. Todd Harris (producer of the recent "Urbania") for J. Todd Harris Productions in LA. Not until 2002 did Saturn decide to finally try his hand at music and produce an album. After re-locating to his birthplace of Baltimore, MD, Saturn formed his own label SJG Entertainment and began to create his first CD. The studio he found that could fit his budget was actually a basement and consisted of a Yamaha AW4416 Hard Disk Recorder, an AKAI MPC 2000 XL MIDI, and a Marshal microphone. Using only his Yamaha PSR-540 home keyboard Saturn played all the music, sang all the vocals and produced all the songs to his debut, "The Virgin Poet". Released independently in July 2002, The Virgin Poet proved to be quite a unique experience to listeners and defied being placed in a genre. In support of the album, Saturn performed solo at open mics, Pride Festivals in DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, most recently appeared at the Meow Mix in Manhattan and Ed Mannix's "A Circle of Berdaches" in Brooklyn. The most notable performance was a full concert which he produced at Eubie Blake National Institute of Jazz in May 2003. Also in 2003, Saturn was honored to be a featured artist on Audiofile. Audiofile is a segment of "This Way Out", a gay and lesbian radio news magazine that is broadcast nationally on over 130 stations. Songs from "The Virgin Poet" receive airplay on 91.7 FM KOOP Austin, TX and KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston, TX as well independent webcast stations. These days Saturn is busy at work on a new CD, is still performing when he can, and will embark on a search for dancers, musicians, and a manager to take him to the next level of his career. With only one year in the indie music biz, he's turning heads, raising eyebrows and looking forward to what is shaping up to be long and promising career.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Since I am currently a "one man band" in that I solely produce my own music, I perform rarely. But when I do perform, I perform to my own tracks. Sometimes I'll have a piano player with me. A special moment would be March 17, 2003 when I had my first concert. It was a lot of work to put that on by myself, but in the end, I learned a great deal, so it was well worth it.
Your musical influences
I love music, all kinds. The older I get, the more interesting music I discover, and the more influences I have. But my biggest influence is easily Prince. To date, I still think he's the baddest mutha around, nobody else even comes close. Purple Rain is the album that made me want to do music. Other artists that have influenced me include Madonna, Depeche Mode, U2, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Alanis Morissette and most recently I have a thrilling love affair with the music of Coldplay. Their music is forever in my CD player. Just excellent.
What equipment do you use?
I recorded my CD on a shoestring budget, meaning I used a home Yamaha keyboard, and AKAI drum machine and a Yamaha hard disk recorder. In fact, I'm still using that, but I'm looking to upgrade to something software based like Protools or Cakewalk. Why do the studios that offer that have to be so expensive?? :-)
Anything else?
Yes. Buy my CD! If you don't like it, ship it back to me and I'll give you your money back!
