www.patchworks.ca - Full Effect's album 'Atlantis' is the work of Jan Franklin and Simon Speller. My initial impression of the 8 song album was that it is a great collection of dancefloor tunes. Upon listening to the entire thing from start to finish in one sitting I realized that it is indeed that, and beyond. It proves to be a great album to sit down (as well as to dance along to) and listen to as a whole, and is a great journey through trance. The title track gets things started off nicely with a distorted acid line and romping bass before kicking in with an uplifting melody. That's one of the aspects that I loved about Atlantis, how a growling acid line could sit waiting to pounce just beyond the melodic synths - a great mix of dark and hard along side melodic and uplifting. The tracks 'Ibiza Fluu' and 'Mindstate' demonstrate the duo's ability to sensibly use epic trance elements while avoiding the cheesy cliche trance sound. Psychadelic trance fans will also find some of what they're looking for here with tightly arpeggiated synths and floating raw analog sounds. My favourite track would have to be 'Tidal Wave'. It maintains that darker sound that I find very appealing, a big build-up that gives you that sinking feeling deep down in your stomach only to kick into an evil TB-303 sound and finally blending it all together in an energetic track sure to whip any dancefloor into a frenzy! Overall, a great offering with extremely well written tracks, I await in anticipation for some follow-up work.
