Band/artist history
Ever since that unfortunate revolving door accident back when she was a kid, Sally Tomato has been hung up... hung up on things most people have decided not to think about. "I remember staring at a red edible object wondering why I could never bring myself to eat one without spitting it out as if I was eating one of my own. As i stared into the eye of the Tomato I was filled with VITAMIN SEE. My red, plant-like soul is often misinterpreted and uncomfortably mischievous." Sally Tomato, Atlantis, 1979 Where Sally Tomato came from is not very clear. Her father was apparently a hobo, who (legends say) crossed the Atlantic to meet a Tuscan Princess at the Palace of the Golden Barnacles. She conveyed to him the labyrinthal secrets of her ancestors, delivered in a mysterious tongue which only he could translate. Sally Tomato is a pool hustler - the maritime society from which the earliest records of Sally Tomato's childhood could be extracted via the diary entries of an estranged father, speak of a medievalish society which concocted improbable images and doctored the stories filtering their beliefs in an effort to strengthen their impact. Sometimes Sally Tomato feels like it might all be very, very real. At times, it is said, one can become Sally Tomato, if only for an instant. Like the father have you not had times where you've woken up in a westward-bound boxcar and all you remember is watching the sun rise through the wheat fields? perhaps thinking that there was a wise bum next to you with wise stories to tell you on this wise train? a situation which nonetheless offered new insight or new wisdom that you could ponder upon? that you could incorporate into your personality? ... Other times Sally Tomato laughs and scoffs it off. This may have something to do with the fact that she knows every Verdi opera by heart. "I also had not remembered the previous night's events but found myself wandering beneath the Belmont Bridge, underneath where the murdered the montage exists and ran into Sally on the train tracks, she was perched on one of the tracks, like an Indian, carefully and deliberately placing one foot in front of the other. Like a vessel of enlightenment,... a humanoid, a vehicle chosen to expose to you the conditions encountered while visiting our planet, she looked at her feet and seemed to wonder what she was doing walking on a singular train track. Sally Tomato relieved the tracks of her presence and we ate the New Orleans style restaurant nearby. I had the spicy Mac and she had a bunch of Rainiers. Then we went over to her place and finger-painted on the walls for forty days and forty nights, after which we stared at the used finger paint carcasses for a fortnight. We then looked at the wall, and we saw two words... inscribed in pink and blue.. 'Sally Tomato'..." "Since then we have conversed off and on the deepest of level and remembered it almost half as many times. There is a scene where Sally Tomato gives a weather report. Sally has asked me to write down everything that I spend money on. This book reads like something that will make you cry, a sad story. she analyzed what it would be like to live in this sad story. In prison, one has a lot of time to think. all the time in the world..." unknown street musician, Portland, 2004.
