The St Josephs Institution Military Bands main focus is on music and to lead it, is the SJIMBs music director, Mr Lester Lim Chong Choon. He led the SJIMB to achieve a Gold Award at the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging after a 15-year hiatus. At the 2001 and 2003 SYF Central Judging, the SJIMB was awarded a Silver Award. Mr Lims deep and extraordinary perception of music has brought the SJIMB to greater heights in terms of musical performance and understanding
Band/artist history
In 1963, under the directorship of Brother Justinian De Souza, a full military band was established in St Josephs Institution (SJI), comprising of brass and woodwind instruments and the percussion or drum section. Three student leaders, Vincent Undasan, Joseph Peters and Peter Low, helped its transformation from a Corp of Drums into St Josephs Military Band (SJIMB) that was established in 1957. From her humble beginnings till today, certain qualities have always stood out in the Band: fierce and unwavering loyalty to both SJI and the SJIMB, strict discipline and its utmost dedication to training. It is these same qualities that make the Band a resounding success and outstanding as a uniform group in SJI. The St Josephs Institution Military Band, unlike other uniform groups that come under national bodies, is totally supported by the SJI alone. Thus, it is accountable to the school for its use of facilities, funds and other resources. Service to SJI has always and will always be the SJIMBs chief priority.
