Band/artist history
The task of understanding an artist is traditionally based on the initial question “Who is”? But at a time of pre-packaged concepts, it would be better served to begin by telling you who this artist is not. Rogiérs is not the extension of a familiar sound once removed nor is he the reincarnation of soul music lost then found. Rogiérs is what he has always been. A skilled singer-songwriter, musician, arranger and producer, this 24-year old performer is an artist in the purest sense of the word. His engaging and seductive material is accomplished in its musical command. Poetic but not clichéd, Rogiérs’ distinctive writing style evens-out the sound of today’s popular and urban music by combining elements of R&B, Pop, Soul and Jazz. A true example of Rogiérs’ diverse artistry can be seen in his live performances. Backed by a supporting cast of seasoned musicians, Rogiérs takes total control of the stage and delivers a buoyant, free-flowing performance which absorbs his audiences every time. The consummation of his debut album is the top off to years of training, preparation, a lifetime of inevitability and offers listeners a renewed faith in, heartfelt R&B. With a voice ripe of history and resonant with willfulness, Rogiérs’ journey began in his native home of St. Croix, USVI with his first classical piano recital at the age of five. By age 18 he had played piano with the Washington D.C. based jazz band “A Moment’s Notice”, toured with Off-Broadway theatre group “Uprising” and performed among the likes of Gloria Estefan, Jessye Norman, Stephanie Mills, Vickie Winans, and Richard Smallwood to name a few. Soon after he was awarded with a full-scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music (in Boston) where he studied voice with Broadway legend and mentor, Vivian Reed and earned a BA in Music Business and Management. Rather than finding mere satisfaction in such early achievements, Rogiérs instead marked them as the beginning of a much broader success. After moving to New York, his unique style of writing and arranging garnered the full attention of industry insiders allotting him the opportunity to work with producers Loren Dawson (J-Lo, Mary J. Blige), Grammy-award winning songwriter, Anita McCloud (Usher/ “U Remind Me”), Bernard Bell, Ray Chew, Charles “Poogie” Bell, and C.D. Hawkins among others. But it was while recording his own full-length album that Rogiérs was called on to play keyboards and organ with the then emerging talent Alicia Keys. Although extensive touring for two years prolonged the completion of his project, Rogiérs’ work for and commitment to Alicia yielded an invaluable experience to his already long list of credits. In 2003, Rogiérs took his career to a new level. With the cultivated support of a new management team, Rogiérs expanded his presence in New York and abroad as a fierce solo artist and subsequently proved to many that he is still around and more resolute than ever. With featured live performances at New York hotspots like S.O.B’s, The Village Underground, Soul Café, Sugar Bar, Joe’s Pub and other venues, Rogiérs was highlighted at the B.B. Kings Club as opening act for Vivian Green (Sony), Leela James (Warner Bros.), and soul diva-legend, Stephanie Mills. Rogiérs made his international debut in Europe on the London-based radio show, Solarradio (www.solarradio.com) where his single(s) continue in the show’s rotation and in club venues. Since then Rogiérs placed among 10 semi-finalists in the 2004 Michelob Jazz Vocal Competition (NY), wrote and sang on the sophomore album from R&B/Neo-soul artist, Bilal (formerly of Interscope Records), and was recently featured as a guest artist on the debut album from Soul/Funk/R&B group, Platinum Pied Pipers (Ubiquity Records) singing his rendition of Paul Simon’s “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover”. Although he has yet to release a full-length album, The ROGIÉRS CD Sampler (released /05) recently made the “Bestseller” list on www.TowerRecords.com and has been a “Top Editor’s Pick” for four months in the Contemporary Urban category and three months in the R&B/Pop Crossover categories of www.CDBaby.com. The Rogiérs CD Sampler has attracted large radio and club support in London-UK, The Netherlands, Germany, France as well as Spain. U.S. Markets so far include Washington, D.C., Atlanta, and North Carolina. For an artist with such an extensive background like that of Rogiérs’, the essence of good “real” music is a given quality. “I really don’t look at any of my experiences as if one is better than the otherI mean they all make me what I am, what I was, and what I will be.” The debut CD consists of 17 original tracks and boasts production by Rogiérs himself, Bernard Belle (“Remember the Time”/Michael Jackson), Robert Glapser (Bilal), Keith Harris (Black Eyed Peas), Charles&Mitch (Jeff Bradshaw/Floetry), and five brilliant up and coming producers. Highlights come courtesy of the undeniably coy club banger, “Move” and the heartfelt arrangement of Michael Jackson’s classic, “Lady in My Life” which reveals Rogiérs’ estimable skills as a full-fledged singer and self-contained artist. Rogiérs proves to be extraordinarily adept at songwriting, vocal arranging and production. Throughout the CD, the varied tracks remain coherent, well-balanced and not overly busy. One could imagine fans of Usher, D’Angelo, Sting, Mary J. Blige and Sade all equally enjoying and banging their heads to this record. Out of the many artists to grace the charts in the past 5 or so years, only a handful have made a lasting impression on behalf of the legacy of black music, leaving soul seekers with a longing to discover a new voice of reason. Rogiérs won’t be the artist delivering pseudo-classical, lifeless performances nor will he be ranked among todays highly overrated. He offers much more than saccharine ghetto love and pain themes of contemporary R&Bin fact, he couldn’t be any of those things if he tried. Natural, humble and steady in approach, his music transcends the usual boundaries of urban sound and bares undeniable passion. And though he is an up and coming imminent force, not once has Rogiérs professed to be the answerbut he damn well is at least part of the solution. 2005 Fibby Music Group
