ROCKTOPUS
Rocktopus loves to play. Rocktopus loves to record. We can't think of a better job than this one. And we use the word "job" loosely because we sleep until noon and nobody ever yells at us because we lost the keys to the forklift.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Spencer Albee: Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards
Hache: Bass, Vocals
Brian Higgins: Drums, Vocals
Zach Jones: Guitar, Vocals
"Rocktopus [is] a quartet that thrives on melodicism, high energy, and a healthy mix of old and new influences. Inspired by such 60s pop icons as Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney, Rocktopus' sound is also infused with the energy of the late-70s power-pop movement (Joe Jackson, Cheap Trick, the Cars) and updated with sensibilities reminiscent of Ben Folds and Barenaked Ladies."
"Rocktopus is overloaded with chops smarts and production talent. What's more, its knowledge of vintage pop styles is clearly encyclopedic."
"I never thought I would be comparing any contemporary musician to Paul McCartney, but...like McCartney of old, Albee has brilliant pop instincts, superior musicianship and flawless technique. This is pop regarded as art."
"With big hooks, solid grooves, great solos, and wry lyrics...the band rocks through a tight 45 minute set...The packed house is completely caught off guard. I have never seen such a fast rush to the merchandise table."
"Albee is a burgeoning multi-instrumental, songwriting talent who could eventually travel along the lines of Prince or Matt Johnson, or Pete Yorn. He can, like the rarest of scribes, pull verses and chorus from the ether."
"The music itself is an interesting blend of sounds which mixes together to form a sort of milkshake for your ears. If you hate milkshakes, well, f**k you; it's my analogy and you can get bent if you don't like it."
"The best manage to rise above their own legacy to create ever-more influential work: Coltrane left Miles Davis behind, Bob Mould left Husker Du behind, and Spencer Albee has moved on from the [Rustic Overtones] rather nicely. This is a young band with an infinite future, making it exclusively on the merits of their own efforts."
