"The Singing Detective" uses 1960's doo-wop as a satiric knife to get under the festering skin of its antihero. While there may have been no intended darkness to numbers like "Poison Ivy," "Harlem Nocturne" and "Three Steps to Heaven," the tunes take on a whole new nasty aura when sung by the film's odious characters. In the Detective's only "original" rendition, star Robert Downey Jr. shows that he indeed has the stuff to be a crooning gumshoe with his haunting rendition of "In My Dreams," the video of which is also included in the soundtrack's bonus DVD.
