Riboflavin is a band that formed in 2003 in Paris, France. The key members Alabama, Nam Chi Vu, Mark Doyle, and Keith Goodwin were all working at an English language Punk newspaper. They played for several years in Europe releasing three albums, including the critically acclaimed underground punk album Subliminal Criminal which was a combination of punk, noise, and acid jazz, and which starts with the line, This film is not formatted to fit your screen.
The band moved back to the states in late 2005as the drummer put it to get some sleep. They lived in a flat without running water for a year, played most of the clubs about, and recorded Qui, a raw, heavy, and truly unique album that is based on the characters from Dostoevskys The Idiot. In 2006, they moved to San Diego and took a hiatus from touring to concentrate on a still unreleased album, with the working title FUCK. Unfortunately, recording was interrupted when the lead singer was arrested in early 2006 for drug possession and supposed ties with organized crime. He was also charged with reckless endangerment when he threw a deer antler at a persons car causing the person to hit a tree. There are some pretty funny stories out there in how the whole situation unfolded. He was released this year and recording has renewed on the album.
The band has always called themselves a country band, but they are probably more closely defined by a more punk sensibility. Since the beginning, they have been courted by several major labels, but they have always turned them down believing this would take away their no holds bar approach to music. The singer once said, If I want to write a Polka song, I dont want some jackass over my shoulder telling me it aint cool! All their music is recorded in a studio they built in Southern California that is run by solar power. During there time in Greenwich Village, they were labeled the hermits of rock an roll, as they will only play out when they want to and for a cause they believe in.
