Ray Staar has been "in the business" since landing a job doing lights at the legendary Whisky-a-Go-Go on the Sunset Strip in 1966. He traveled extensively with the crew of The Association throughout the late '60's, ran nightclubs and produced radio and TV commercials throughout much of the '70's and '80's. Ray has written songs solo and collaborated with the likes of David Frieberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Starship), Terry Kirkman (the Association), John Blakeley (the Sandals) and Grammy winning producer/writer Rick Nowels. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, family and a menagerie of pets.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I play live in my studio. I also play dead in my studio sometimes. Very seldom, however, do I do either in public.
Your musical influences
Les Paul, Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin, Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Tom Petty, Pete Elman, John Blakeley, Rick Nowels and a host of others.
What equipment do you use?
Sonar 3 PE, Roland 2080, 1080, R8, Kurzweil 250, 2000 and 2000 vp. Lots of techie gear and one, very old and tired nylon string guitar.
